We love exotics because well, they’re exotic, but this takes the jungle vibe a step further. It’s downright dangerous looking! And who doesn’t crave the element of danger every now and again?
The basic shape allows the skin to take center stage (that’s good because any additional flair would shove this over the edge), and the super-snaky effect delivers plenty of drama, which Alexander McQueen has never been known to shy away from. Come on, this is a brand whose signature is an often-bedazzled skull! Neutral elaphe looks great on an otherwise simple and smallish satchel; this organic pattern is strong enough to speak for itself.
High-gloss and in-your-face: this might be too much for some, but I happen to like nature in its most natural form, and this feels like something straight out of the jungle that belongs right on your arm. Alexander McQueen Padlock available for pre-order at Saks Fifth Avenue for $2,395

It has been weeks since Alexander Wang first started teasing us with his epic spring/summer 2016 campaign, the photos of which on Instagram (Wang even launched a separate account, @wangsquad) all have one thing in common – some good, inspirational girl power vibes. The long-awaitedAlexander Wang spring 2016 campaign features in fact the most iconic models of the moment that Wang calls the #WangSquad.
Lensed by Kevin Klein, the campaign takes us to New York City, more precisely to Crest Hardware Brooklyn and Erin McKenna’s Bakery, perfectly embodying the Big Apple’s chaotic yet effervescent spirit. The photos flawlessly capture any day in the life of the average New Yorker girl, who is tough, yet with an effortlessly chic haute couture twist. The models cast for the campaign are Baauer, Isabella Emmack, Molly Bair, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Stella Lucia, Anna Ewers, Lucian Smith, Kaia Gerber, Alice Metza, John Swiatek, Diego Villarreal, Alice Glass, Makonnen, Issa Lish, Binx Walton, Lexi Boling, Peyton Knight, and Vic Mensa, not to mention Aluna Francis, lead singer of AlunaGeorge, music producer and rapper Travi$ Scott, and even Korean pop star CL. Wang, along with stylist Karl Templer, makeup artist Polly Osmond and hairstylist Anthony Turner, searched for the perfect squad members both in the fashion and music industries, adding top-notch artistic touches to this already highly artistic campaign.
Among Wang’s models, Cindy Crawford’s lookalike daughter Kaia Gerber was probably the one who spent the most time teasing us via her Instagram account, as Wang gave us a hint about his soon-to-be released campaign publishing Gerber’s Polaroid picture featuring the ‘coming soon’ caption. Is it also Gerber’s way to tell us that she is about to slay on the runaways soon too? She might still be a teenager, but the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, or so they say.
Then, while browsing through the pictures, Wang’s willingness to lessen the distances between pop art and fashion becomes undeniably clear, as the designer’s ready-to-wear line-up creations are not the very first things that catch the eye. The Alexander Wang SS 2016 collection’s many pieces perfectly blend in with the campaign’s sets, looking like they were just meant to go along together. Wang’s line-up actually exudes some cool Nineties-grunge vibes, and the street-style aesthetics along with the campaign’s overall vintage effects are nothing but a pure pleasure to watch.
It is also worth mentioning the ultimate grunger starring in the campaign – John Swiatek, whose heroin-chic attitude could just perfectly sum up Wang’s entire collection. The multitude of jewelry pieces used (Wang launched his first-ever jewelry collection under his eponymous label just a few months ago) and the relatable young models eating junk food are then the icing on the cake, making us thrilled to see more campaigns featuring the iconic #Wangsquad in future.

It seems that the latest trend among top designers is to put together a beauty line, from lipsticks to creams to everything in between. You do not even need to be a designer to do that, with models and actresses all pitching in to make our beauty selection all the more difficult. They all want a piece, but there are only so many lipsticks and eyeshadows and blushes and nail polishes that we can buy at one time, meaning that many of them will not actually be selling as much as they could have, simply due to the large number of top members of the fashion and acting worlds all competing for top spot in beauty. Of course, with so many veering towards that direction, we begin to question when the rest will be joining them; it is not a matter of whether or not the designers will jump on the bandwagon, but when they will succumb to the latest trend. Alexander Wang is one such designer who has had us wondering about him jumping into the beauty line industry as well.
Funny story, the Alexander Wang name was being used by another, an Etincelle Paris, who had been selling a class of goods that extends to perfumes and cosmetics. Alexander Wang himself had launched his eponymous label in 2007 and when he wanted to register his own name in 2012 on jewelry, cosmetics and fragrances, the name appeared to be taken. He has won it back now, but the story sure is amusing.
We wonder what sum was paid to the company who had hijacked the brand, if anything at all. “Etincelle’s actions are a textbook case of trademark squatting,” Wang’s lawyers Anthony Van der Planken and Thierry van Innis told The Fashion Law. “The Board examined the validity of the EU trademark registration ‘Alexander Wang’ for perfumeries and cosmetics in Class 3, not by the famous American fashion designer himself, but by Etincelle Paris, an obscure entity from the British Virgin Islands.”
Well, when the courts ruled in favor of the real Wang, and when it was found out that Etincelle had also jacked the names of Pierre Hardy, Philippe Plein and Isabel Marant, it became clear that the judgement would be going in favor of the plaintiff here.
So now, we know he picked up his name back and Wang was considering a cosmetics line, which means that Alexander Wang, the one with the interesting punk-style designs to his collections, will be having his own beauty line soon enough. His models may have gone out bare faced of late, but we do not give up hope yet, knowing that his fragrance with Balenciaga was only the start of a new era for the designer.
